It’s beach season, and in Northern California we are blessed to live near some of the most beautiful beaches in the country—perhaps even the world! It’s hard to narrow down the finest of these, but here are five of my top picks for you beach aficionados out there:
Where Is It?
Spanning a mile of shoreline to the west of the Golden Gate Bridge, this scenic beach is part of the Presidio, a former military installation dating back to 1776.
Why Do I Love It?
This beach is stunning at all times of day, but I especially love its views of the Golden Gate at sunset. In fact, trails branching off the beach lead you right through the old military battery to the base of the bridge.
Three Rocks Beach, Half Moon Bay
Where Is It?
This rocky stretch separates the Pacific Ocean from the grounds of the Ritz-Carlton’s Half Moon Bay outpost.
Why Do I Love It?
Not only is this beach a picture-perfect destination, but it places you within steps of the resort’s posh amenities, including golf courses, fine dining, tennis courts, and a spa—perfect for a day or weekend away!
Where Is It?
The most rural of all five of these picks, Panther Beach is about a twenty-minute drive from the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.
Why Do I Love It?
It’s not exactly easy to access—reaching the beach requires descending a rough natural staircase—but at low tide you can wander through the famous Hole in the Wall and explore nearby tidepools.
Carmel Beach, Carmel-By-The-Sea
Where Is It?
Follow Ocean Avenue right through the heart of Downtown Carmel to this idyllic swathe of soft sand overlooking Carmel Bay.
Why Do I Love It?
Its beautiful white sands are a rarity in Northern California. My next favorite feature is that you’re just a stroll away from all the cafés, boutiques, and art galleries of Downtown Carmel.
Where Is It?
Iconic 17 Mile Drive looks over this world-renowned beach that neighbors some of the highest-rated golf in the country.
Why Do I Love It?
Aside from its breathtaking location and views, this area hosts a range of exciting annual traditions, including the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Golf Tournament and the Concours d’Elegance Auto Show.
