Winter skies offer some of the clearest views of the stars, and the South Bay has some incredible spots for just that. During this season of love, consider taking your family or special someone to these top stargazing hangouts:
- LICK OBSERVATORY
Perched atop Mount Hamilton, Lick Observatory was established in 1888 and houses the historic 36-inch Great Lick Refractor telescope. The observatory hosts public events and private tours that include telescope viewings and astronomy lectures, and its surrounding areas consistently provide excellent stargazing conditions.
- COMMUNICATIONS HILL GRAND STAIRCASE
Located in San Jose, this urban spot offers panoramic views of the city skyline and a chance to see the stars on clear nights. The 252-step climb leads to an open vantage point, making it ideal for casual, spontaneous stargazing.
- HENRY W. COE STATE PARK
Northern California’s largest state park enjoys vast open spaces with minimal light pollution. It’s open 24 hours, making it a favorite among amateur astronomers. The San Jose Astronomical Association (SJAA) frequently uses the Hunting Hollow entrance and main overflow lot for observation sessions.
- MONTE BELLO OPEN SPACE PRESERVE
This scenic preserve in the foothills near Los Altos is a quiet, accessible stargazing destination. The After-Hours Astronomy Permit allows visitors to use the parking lot for skywatching until 3AM. The permit is free but must be obtained in advance.
- COYOTE LAKE HARVEY BEAR RANCH COUNTY PARK
Near Gilroy, Coyote Lake Park is ideal for stargazing, boasting open skies and minimal interference. The SJAA highlights the boat ramp and dam areas as prime viewing spots. The park is open 24/7 with an entrance fee.
